The Ravenswood Residence, located in Chicago, perfectly combines mid-century and classical styles into modern home design with a touch of decadence. The purpose of the project was to build something beautiful to live in. From a powerful combo of Portuguese and Italian design, the project has an adequate detail of intimacy blended perfectly with the different styles, being the reason why this project became such a success. Home Decor Ideas takes you inside this incredible space!

Approached by bicoastal clients, who craved a more permanent place to settle, Emily Mackie of Inspired Interiors helped her clients combine possessions from homes in San Francisco and New York into their large, modern home in Ravenswood, Chicago. In search of the crème de la crème, Mackie travelled to Maison&Objet, a furniture show in Paris, and sourced from Portuguese and Italian designers who have long been invested in the quality of craftsmanship.

One of the main challenges Mackie faced was the scale of the modern home. To create intimacy in such a large dining room, she offset the scale of the high ceilings with towering candlesticks and extravagant chandeliers from Luxxu and found a long dining table to appropriately fill the space. Blue details in a mix of rich shades bring in elegance, without veering into the territory of traditional design, as shown in the sky-blue rug and teal dining chairs from Essential Home. A photorealistic painting acts as a window onto a blue beach; the casual, relaxed nature of the scene helps to balance the chic formality of the dining room design, without detracting from its sophistication.

Mackie loves to learn the process of how each piece is crafted, from its conception in the mind of the artisan to the final finishes that subtly elevate an object from ordinary to extraordinary. In this dining table multiple layers of lacquer soften the appearance of the wood table’s surface, until it seems to transform into a reflective glass—understanding the high level of skill and creativity required to create luxury furniture, such as this table, helps Mackie to select pieces that are as inspired as artworks.

Paired with a blooming, soft-edged cloud painting, curved furniture like the sofa and coffee table create an atmosphere of soft luxury in the modern home. Custom bar cabinets, remind us that the parlour is meant for entertaining. To update the cabinets, Mackie upholstered the exterior with leather strips, heightening the textural elements of the room, and built-in a mirrored interior back, which serves as a unique, secret detail that the clients can reveal to guests. Together, a sculpturesque side table and an Art Deco-style accent chair deliver a perfect setting for enjoying drinks, while a pedestal table near the sofa serves as an additional drinks table.

A chic grey wallpaper matches the horns of the animals in the artwork—a kudu is on the left and a wildebeest, on the right. The mid-century-style floor lamp adds a touch of black to the space, while live-edge tables with smoked acrylic log storage below bring in natural wood, ensuring that the space is relaxed as well as artful. A pale grey rug softly contributes another layer of texture, as does the tufted upholstered bench with tapered legs that Mackie custom-designed for the space.

Beautiful barrel ceilings complement the arch of the window, framing scenic views of the backyard. Underneath, an oversized custom sectional is large enough for the clients to invite over a coterie of guests—they host private screenings of documentaries created by filmmaker friends here in the living room.

In blush and lavender tones, a romantic master bedroom merges contemporary design with pure, immersive comfort. Above a cream-coloured, leather bed, this Geisha-lip artwork offers a focal point for the eye, bringing a touch of scarlet to the room. Hard-edged vanguard nightstands on either side of the bed counter the soft, curved shapes of the space to explore an appealing visual tension, while the gilded ceiling light enhances the dynamic glamour of the luxury design.

An intimate seating area in front of a log fireplace helps structure the bedroom design as a private, restful world, complete unto itself. Plush upholstered lounge chairs from Essential Home face off across an expressive ottoman, and underneath, a lush rug contributes further cosiness to the space. Above the log fireplace, another photorealistic painting depicts an approaching storm, achieving a rich juxtaposition against the lavish, dream-like style of the modern home.

Although only one is visible here, his and hers vanities offer ample space for daily rituals of self-care in the master bath. Linear sconces flank each vanity, emphasizing the straight edges of the mirrors. Marble details offer endless luxury, while a dark, warm wallpaper in a herringbone veneer pattern contrasts with the coolness of the marble.

The curved, jewelled fixture mirrors the curved millwork in front of the bathtub and offers an ornate, decadent feeling to the bathroom design.
