But while the location of this home is dreamy, it had been newly built relatively recently and lacked warmth and personality when a couple with three young children bought it. They looked to interior designer Sharon Rembaum to inject interest.

“They wanted a rich, eclectic home that was sophisticated but livable, somewhere that gave them the opportunity to express their creative sensibilities.” – recalls Sharon Rembaum

Fast forward to today, and the living-dining area is a favorite space where the homeowners – a lawyer and a property developer – enjoy entertaining friends and their large extended family. A mix of styles, with a decidedly contemporary outlook, the New York State home is a masterclass in mixing-and-matching art and design.

Rembaum helped the duo select vintage furniture and lighting to add depth to the mix of new and custom furniture pieces; a Florian Schulz arc lamp in the living room, sourced from a dealer in Berlin, is a standout. It is offset with an oversized art piece by Whitney McVeigh, part of the extensive art collection that Rembaum curated, comprising paintings, photography, and sculpture from across Europe and the United States.

“Interestingly, much of the art we chose was by female artists, such as Mattea Perrotta, Mimi Jung and Aude Herledan,” – Sharon Rembaum

But patience and persistence paid off: after almost two years, the interior is now smart-yet-serene, somewhere that is comforting for the family and inviting to guests.
