Cairo-based architect Laithy Mekawy has envisioned an oasis of tranquillity along the north coast of Alexandria. A masterfully articulated mix of modern luxe and rustic, elemental charm, this serene house set in Egypt’s idyllic beachfront enclave, Caesar Bay, is home to an investment banker and his wife. They had approached architect Laithy Mekawy to envision a space that was sharp and contemporary, and yet rooted within its local context.

A self-proclaimed laid-back host, entertaining comes naturally to Laithy Mekawy and often helps him imagine the perfect flow of spaces and functions within his residential projects.
“It’s all about the intricacies within the intricacies. Something as simple as a doorknob, or even a light switch can be a source of great pleasure. No detail is too small.” – says Laithy Mekawy.

Shades of eggshell, cream, and pale smoke are accentuated by interesting pottery, natural materials including wicker, linen, terrazzo, and canvas, with furniture, artwork, and bathroom fittings adding a nuanced punch of color.
Abstract art and Rana Ajam’s exquisite sculptures provide contrast in both color and geometry in a way that lends thrill and drama without taking away from the overall sense of peace and calm.
Outside, a wonderfully marbled courtyard basks in a timeless Mediterranean vibe courtesy of white rough-stone, aged terracotta pots, and lush planting that looks even more dramatic as the sun casts ethereal shadows throughout the day, and leaves the home washed in the amber glow of evening light. laithyarchitects.com
